Scaffold Tower Sizes: 3m, 5m, 6m and 8m

How to read tower heights and match a platform to the job - because it is the platform height, not the tower height, that decides your reach.

Four aluminium scaffold towers in 3m, 5m, 6m and 8m platform sizes positioned side by side on a work site in Dublin

Platform height vs working height

The single most useful thing to understand about tower sizes is the difference between two numbers. The platform height is how high the working deck sits. The working height is how high you can actually reach - roughly the platform height plus about 2m, because a person standing on the deck can work overhead. Towers are usually specified by platform height, so a '6m tower' gives a platform at 6m and a working reach of around 8m. Always size on the reach you need, not the number in the name. Choosing a size by the job

Platform Approx. reach Typical jobs
3m ~5m Ceilings, internal maintenance, single-storey soffits, signage
5m ~7m Single-storey external walls, gutters, first-floor windows
6m ~8m Two-storey elevations, rendering and painting to upper floors
8m ~10m High two-storey and low three-storey maintenance and repairs

5m platform scaffold tower set up outside a single-storey property for gutter clearing and soffit repair

Other measurements that matter

  • Deck length and width - a longer deck covers more of a wall between moves and carries more; a narrow-width tower fits tight access like a side passage.
  • Base and stabilisers - the taller the tower, the wider the effective base it needs. Outriggers or stabilisers are what let a tower go higher safely.
  • Indoor vs outdoor limits - towers can be built higher indoors (no wind) than outdoors. Do not exceed the maker's stated free-standing height for the setting.

Not sure which size?

Tell us the job and the height you need to reach and we will recommend the right tower - or a stair tower if you need repeated, safe pedestrian access to the platform. See our Scaffold Tower Hire.

Tower size FAQs

  • What size scaffold tower do I need for a two-storey house?
A 6m platform (about 8m reach) covers most two-storey elevations. For high two-storey or low three-storey work, step up to an 8m platform.
  • Is tower height the same as reach?
No. Towers are described by platform height, but your reach is roughly the platform height plus about 2m, because you can work overhead from the deck. Size on reach, not the name.
  • What size tower for internal or ceiling work?
A 3m platform suits most ceilings and single-storey internal work. Indoors, with no wind, towers can also be built higher than the same tower outdoors within the maker's limits.
