Scaffold hoists and material lifts: when they earn their keep
The economics of lifting materials up the scaffold
A scaffold hoist is a powered lift fixed to the scaffold that raises materials up the outside of the building, so they do not have to be carried up by hand. It earns its keep on longer commercial hires and on jobs that move a lot of material - roofing, cladding, rendering, refurbishment - where the labour it saves and the manual handling injuries it avoids quickly outweigh the hire rate. On short jobs with little material, hand-balling or a loading bay may be enough; the more material and the longer the programme, the stronger the case for a hoist.
Every block, bag and board carried up a ladder is labour spent not building, and a risk taken not needed. A scaffold hoist does that lifting mechanically. The question on any job is not whether a hoist is nicer to have - it obviously is - but when it actually pays for itself. Here is how that works out.
What a hoist actually saves
Two things: time and bodies. A crew hand-carrying materials up spends hours a day on the ladder rather than on the tools, and every trip is a manual-handling risk on a repetitive, tiring task. A hoist turns that into a controlled mechanical lift, freeing labour for productive work and cutting the back injuries that come from carrying loads up height all day. On a job with real material volume, that saving is measured in days of programme, not minutes.
When it pays for itself

Conversely, a short job moving little material, or one already served by a well-placed loading bay and telehandler, may not need one. It is a genuine calculation, not a default.
Loads and safe use
A hoist has a rated safe working load like any lifting equipment, and it is used within it - materials only, loaded and controlled correctly, with the landing edges protected. It is installed and tied into the scaffold as a designed element, not clamped on as an afterthought, and inspected as part of the scaffold.

The best time to decide on a hoist is when the scaffold is designed, so the structure carries it and the loading points are planned.
