Layher and other system scaffolds use standardised components - uprights with fixed connection points and ledgers that lock into them - so they go up quickly, consistently and to a known engineered capacity. Tube and fitting is built from plain tube and couplers assembled by hand, which is slower but can form almost any shape around irregular buildings and obstructions. System scaffold wins on speed and repeatability for regular structures; tube and fitting wins on flexibility for complex geometry. On many commercial jobs the two are combined - system for the bulk, tube and fitting for the awkward details.
There are two families of scaffold, and a good contractor uses both. System scaffold - Layher being the best-known make - assembles from pre-engineered components; tube and fitting is built from raw tube and couplers to whatever shape the job needs. System scaffolding (Layher)
System scaffold is engineered kit. The uprights have fixed rosettes or cups at set spacings, and ledgers and braces lock straight into them, so a bay goes up in a fraction of the time it takes to build one from loose tube, with the geometry and capacity known in advance. That speed and consistency is why it dominates large, regular facades and repeat work - less labour on site, predictable strength, faster handover.
Tube and fitting
Tube and fitting is the original method: plain scaffold tube joined by couplers wherever the scaffolder puts them. It is slower and more labour-intensive, but it has no fixed geometry, so it can be built around curves, returns, projections and obstructions that a system's set dimensions cannot follow. For irregular buildings, bridging, and bespoke support work, it remains the flexible solution.

Neither is better overall - they suit different jobs. System scaffold like Layher is faster and more consistent for regular structures; tube and fitting is more flexible for complex or irregular buildings. Good contractors use both, often on the same structure.
