Ladder or scaffold for house painting?
For touching up a single window or a small area, a ladder or a mobile tower may be all you need. But for repainting a full elevation wall, fascia, soffits, downpipes and window reveals a fixed access scaffold is the better choice. A painter working from a continuous platform can reach the whole surface, keep tools and materials to hand, and work methodically top to bottom, which shows in the finish. Working off a ladder for hours, moving it every metre, is slower and far riskier.
What a painting scaffold looks like
For most homes this is an independent tied scaffold along the elevations being painted, with a boarded platform at each level you need to reach single-lift for a low bungalow wall, multi-lift for a two-storey gable. Guardrails and toe boards make the platform safe to move along, and the scaffold can be adapted as the job progresses around the house. What it costs and how long you need it
A standard scaffold for a semi-detached house runs from approximately quoted per week, including erection and dismantlement, with a one-week minimum hire. External painting projects commonly run for one to three weeks depending on the size of the house, the number of coats and the Irish weather. Because hire is weekly, it pays to have your prep, paint and labour organised so the scaffold is not standing idle.
Planning tip
Book the scaffold to match your painting programme, not before it. If you are using a decorator, co-ordinate dates so the platform goes up as they are ready to start you pay by the week, so idle days are wasted money.
Do you need a licence to paint from a scaffold?
If the scaffold stands entirely within your property, no council permission is normally needed. If it oversails or stands on a public footpath common on terraced streets a scaffolding licence from the local authority is required.
